National Arts and Culture Impact Survey (NACIS)

News - Intro image
To ensure that the professional segment of our Canadian choral arts sector is heard, we invite professional choral artists/individuals, as well as professional choral organizations, to fill out this survey. These professional artists/individuals include singers, conductors, artistic directors, composers, arrangers, administrators/managers/arts workers, and accompanists/collaborative pianists -- anyone receiving fees or salaries for their work in the choral arts sector (non-education).
All professional arts organizations, artists, and arts workers across Canada are encouraged to participate in the survey by Monday, November 23, 2020. The survey will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete. The more responses we receive, the better the data will be

Why now?

In order to advocate to government officials and funding bodies, national and provincial arts service organizations need a more concrete understanding of the impact of COVID-19 on the arts and culture sector. Initial arts and culture surveys sent out in the spring gathered data that was instrumental in the design and development of government and public sector policies that helped many artists, arts workers, and arts organizations weather the storm, such as the #ILostMyGig survey.

As we approach the nine-month mark in this complex new landscape, new data is needed to inform medium- and long-term policies that will shape the Canadian cultural sector for years to come. The National Arts and Culture Impact Survey (NACIS) was designed to capture a snapshot in time.

Your contribution to this survey is invaluable in helping our national and provincial arts service organizations paint a clearer picture of the current state of the arts and culture sector and advocate more effectively on your behalf.

What about all the other "non-professional" choirs/singing groups? We have been impacted, too!

Absolutely. Choral Canada and the provincial choral organizations (BC Choral Federation, Choir Alberta, Saskatchewan Choral Federation, Manitoba Choral Association, Choirs Ontario, Alliance chorale du Québec, New Brunswick Choral Federation, Nova Scotia Choral Federation, Choral NL)  are collaborating on our next survey, following up from the one in April 2020, to measure the impact COVID-19 is having on our choral arts sector, including our schools, faith-based choir/singing groups, and volunteer-run choirs/singing groups of all types. More information on that survey will be released soon.

However, if your choir or singing group includes any paid individuals in the arts & culture sector, such as conductors, accompanists and administrators, please have them fill out this NACIS survey. These voices need to be heard in this national advocacy campaign with the other artistic disciplines in Canada.

About the Survey

Questions revolve around the impact COVID-19 has had and will have on your work, finances, and plans. You will not be asked for any identifying information other than the first three digits of your postal code and the arts service organization(s) with which you or your organization are affiliated.

To take the survey, click here: https://survey.pra.ca/SE/1/NACIS/

There are two paths through the NACIS. You may choose to fill it out
  • as an individual professional artist or arts worker,
  • or on behalf of a professional organization, group, or collective.

The survey will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete. If you’d like to represent both perspectives, you may choose to complete the survey twice.

Aggregate data will be shared with and reported on by the arts service organizations who commissioned the study. You will also have the opportunity to consent to sharing your survey responses with Choral Canada and any other arts service organization(s) you select for the purposes of sector- and region-specific reporting.
