Choral Canada is now accepting nominations for the position of Guest Conductor of the 2017 National Youth Choir (NYC) of Canada. Sponsored by Heritage Canada to honour Canada’s sesquicentennial, NYC 2017 is a unique auxiliary to the biennial iterations of this highly acclaimed ensemble. NYC 2017 will rehearse and perform in collaboration with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada on a specialized 3-city tour in July 2017 as part of NYO Canada’s Sesquicentennial Pan-Canadian Tour.
Since 1984, some of the finest Canadian choral conductors have been invited to conduct the choir. The NYC has performed at all Podium, Choral Canada’s national choral conference and also at the 1993 World Symposium on Choral Music in Vancouver. NYC concerts have been broadcast nationally on the CBC Stereo Network.
The Guest Conductor of the 2017 National Youth Choir of Canada will commit to rehearsing the choir July 13 – July 19, 2017, and performing with the choir on tour in Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto: July 20-26, 2017. The conductor will choose and prepare 30 minutes of a cappella choral repertoire and will also teach to the choir: Borodin Polovtsian Dances (subject to change) which will be conducted in performance by the orchestral conductor. The a cappella repertoire may include a work commissioned for NYC 2017.
Additionally, the NYC Conductor will teach and conduct in concert, both choir and orchestra members, a madrigal or comparable work to be sung as a concert encore.
Choral Canada will engage 48-50 singers (4 from each province plus 8-10 from Territories) ages 18-25. As for other renditions of NYC, the singers are chosen by Choral Canada and its Provincial partners rather than by the Conductor.
